Evolving the ARC Raiders Experience: The Shift to Reward Passes
Embark Studios is refining the core progression loop of ARC Raiders. Following the recent news regarding the testing of a PvE toggle, the developers have confirmed that the upcoming Frozen Trail update will officially sunset the Raider Decks system. In its place, the team is rolling out “Reward Passes,” a feature they describe as a necessary step forward for the game’s economy and player retention.
Why Raider Decks Are Being Retired
According to the studio’s official announcement, the decision to move away from Raider Decks stems from an imbalance in the game’s currency flow. Previously, players were able to stockpile “Cred” at an accelerated pace, which inadvertently broke the intended progression curve.
In practice, this meant that whenever a new Raider Deck was introduced, veteran players could instantly unlock all associated content by spending their hoarded currency. This created a “content drought” effect, where the excitement of new rewards was neutralized by immediate completion. By removing the incentive to engage with Feats, the old system inadvertently discouraged long-term play. Much like a marathon runner who reaches the finish line too early, players found themselves with little reason to continue their journey once their stockpiled resources were spent.
How Reward Passes Change the Game
The new Reward Pass system is engineered to provide a more structured and meaningful sense of achievement. Instead of relying on a currency-heavy unlock method, players will now focus on completing specific Feats to climb through tiers of rewards. These unlocks span a wide variety of content, including:
- Customizable outfits and character cosmetics
- Tactical gadgets and specialized weaponry
- Essential gameplay items
- Raider Tokens
By shifting the focus toward consistent participation rather than instant gratification, Embark Studios aims to keep the gameplay loop fresh. This change mirrors industry trends where live-service titles prioritize sustained engagement over rapid consumption. With the Frozen Trail update, the developers hope to ensure that every milestone feels earned, providing a more balanced and rewarding path for both new recruits and seasoned veterans of the wasteland.
