Walton Goggins Joins the Cast of Miami Vice ’85 as a Lethal Antagonist
The highly anticipated cinematic revival, Miami Vice ’85, has officially tapped Walton Goggins to portray a key villain. Known for his recent, critically acclaimed performances in Fallout and The White Lotus, Goggins is set to bring his signature intensity to the big screen. According to Deadline reports, the actor will step into the role of a ruthless assassin and henchman, serving as the primary enforcer for the film’s central antagonist, a powerful cartel kingpin portrayed by John Leguizamo.
A High-Stakes Showdown in the Neon City
Goggins and Leguizamo’s characters will serve as the primary obstacles for the film’s protagonists. The iconic roles of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs have been secured by Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan, respectively. This casting choice signals a major push for star power, mirroring the industry trend of revitalizing 1980s intellectual property with A-list talent to capture both nostalgic audiences and younger demographics.
Reimagining a Television Classic
While the project draws its title and inspiration from the legendary 1980s television series, Miami Vice ’85 is charting its own course. It is important to note that this production is neither a continuation of the original show’s narrative nor a follow-up to Michael Mann’s 2006 feature film adaptation. Instead, director Joseph Kosinski-fresh off the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick and his work on the upcoming F1-is crafting a standalone period piece that aims to capture the aesthetic and atmosphere of the mid-80s through a modern lens.
Production Timeline and Expectations
The road to the screen has seen some adjustments. Originally penciled in for a 2027 debut, the film was pushed back to May 2028 to accommodate scheduling shifts. With cameras expected to start rolling later this year, industry insiders anticipate a flurry of additional casting news as the production team finalizes the ensemble. As the project moves into active development, fans of the Miami Vice ’85 franchise can expect a gritty, high-octane experience that leans heavily into the stylized crime drama roots of the source material.
