A Cautionary Note: Why You Should Avoid Recreating Love and Deepspace’s “Shimmering Blend” Cocktails
In the world of gaming, immersion is the ultimate goal. However, the developers behind the hit RPG-dating sim Love and Deepspace recently had to step in to ensure that immersion doesn’t cross the line into physical danger. Following the release of a series of themed drink recipes, the studio issued an urgent advisory to their community: please, do not attempt to consume these fictional concoctions in real life.
The “Shimmering Blend” Controversy
On September 28, the Love and Deepspace team unveiled five “Shimmering Blend” cocktail recipes. Designed to celebrate the game’s beloved romanceable leads, these drinks were visually stunning and perfectly aligned with the aesthetic of the game’s characters. While the digital presentation was flawless, the inclusion of specific botanical garnishes turned these creative assets into a potential health hazard.
Why These Recipes Are Dangerous
The primary concern stems from the inclusion of toxic flora as decorative elements. While the base ingredients-such as pomegranate and peach juices-are perfectly safe, the suggested garnishes are anything but.
* The Datura Risk: One of the featured drinks pairs pomegranate juice with a datura garnish. In reality, datura is a potent, psychoactive plant. Ingesting even small amounts can trigger severe medical emergencies, including rapid heart rate (tachycardia), intense fever, terrifying hallucinations, and prolonged delirium.
* The Flame Lily Hazard: Another recipe suggests using a flame lily as a garnish for a peach-based drink. Much like datura, the flame lily contains colchicine, a toxic alkaloid that can cause organ failure and other life-threatening symptoms if ingested.
Prioritizing Safety Over Aesthetics
The gaming community is known for its dedication, and fans often go to great lengths to recreate in-game items, from crafting armor to cooking themed meals. However, this situation serves as a stark reminder that game developers sometimes prioritize artistic flair over botanical safety when designing fictional items.
While the Love and Deepspace team intended these recipes to be a fun, thematic celebration of their characters, the real-world chemistry of these plants makes them strictly “look, don’t touch.” If you are looking to host a themed party or enjoy a drink inspired by your favorite characters, stick to edible, non-toxic garnishes like mint, citrus peels, or food-grade flowers. Always verify the safety of any ingredient before incorporating it into a beverage.
