While Greek mythology has recently surged in popularity across mainstream media, these ancient narratives have served as a foundational pillar for Giuseppe di Morabito’s design language for years. However, for his Spring 2027 collection, the designer opted for a radical pivot in narrative focus. Instead of tracing the well-worn path of Odysseus’s maritime odyssey, Di Morabito turned his attention to the domestic stillness of Ithaca, centering the collection on Penelope.
“The cultural obsession is always with the hero’s voyage-the shipwrecks, the decade-long struggle, and the eventual return,” Di Morabito explains. “We overlook Penelope. Her experience wasn’t one of passive waiting; it was a profound, internal evolution that is arguably more significant than the physical journey itself.”
### Material Alchemy and Surface Innovation
This theme of internal transformation was physically manifested through the collection’s experimental textile treatments. Di Morabito pushed the boundaries of traditional luxury by reimagining classic textures. For instance, delicate lace was treated with a shimmering gold foil finish, while python skins were meticulously layered with transparent crystals. This technique allowed the organic patterns of the leather to peek through, creating a glistening, aquatic aesthetic.
“I’ve experimented with animal motifs in the past, but this specific application-encrusting python with clear crystals-is a first for the brand,” the designer noted.
The collection also showcased a mastery of intricate detailing, with pastoral motifs rendered in a vibrant palette of topaz, silver, and aquamarine gemstones. By layering varying widths of lace over sheer organza, Di Morabito effectively engineered entirely new textiles. “We are essentially creating fabrics that didn’t exist before,” he added, highlighting the artisanal labor required to construct these hybrid surfaces.
