The Living Silhouette: Lee Mathews Reimagines Summer Elegance
For veteran designers, the disconnect between a static garment on a hanger and its fluid reality on a human form is a persistent creative hurdle. Lee Mathews, a fixture in the fashion industry for over 27 years, recently addressed this challenge by shifting away from traditional catalog photography. Instead, she transformed a warehouse near her Sydney headquarters into a makeshift runway, capturing her upcoming summer collection in motion.
Movement Over Stillness: A New Presentation
By filming models in transit rather than posing them for standard lookbook shots, Mathews emphasizes the kinetic energy of her designs. This approach highlights how her signature breezy silhouettes interact with the air and the body. As global temperatures continue to climb-with 2023 and 2024 ranking among the hottest years on record-the demand for breathable, high-quality textiles has surged. Mathews’ latest collection is strategically timed for a January release, offering consumers functional, investment-grade pieces designed to withstand rising heat indices.
Reflecting on Two Decades of Design
Mathews’ recent creative direction has been heavily influenced by a sense of nostalgia, sparked by a collaboration with the Australian resale retailer SWOP. Seeing her vintage pieces curated alongside modern, trendy items provided a unique vantage point on her brand’s longevity.
“We visited the Brisbane location and were stunned to see our archival work front and center,” Mathews noted. Encountering garments she had designed nearly twenty years ago, now integrated into a contemporary retail landscape, served as a powerful validation of her design philosophy. It reinforced the idea that her aesthetic-defined by timelessness rather than fleeting trends-remains relevant even as the fashion cycle accelerates.
