Strategic Synergy: Avalanche Studios Group to Spearhead Publishing for Supermassive Games
In a significant move to bolster operational efficiency, Nordisk Games has unveiled a new collaborative framework between two of its prominent subsidiaries: Avalanche Studios Group and Supermassive Games. Under this arrangement, Avalanche will assume responsibility for the global marketing, distribution, and publishing efforts for Supermassive’s upcoming software catalog, starting with the recently released title, Directive 8020.
Preserving Creative Autonomy Amidst Operational Integration
While the two entities are aligning their back-end operations-specifically streamlining finance, human resources, and IT infrastructure-Nordisk Games has emphasized that both studios will maintain complete creative sovereignty. Each developer retains full ownership of its intellectual property, development roadmaps, and unique portfolio strategies.
This model mirrors the “shared services” approach increasingly adopted by major gaming conglomerates to mitigate the rising costs of AAA development. By centralizing administrative burdens, studios can pivot their focus toward core production, a necessity in an era where the average budget for a blockbuster title can exceed $200 million.
A Vision for Long-Term Industry Resilience
Allan Mathson Hansen, CEO of Nordisk Film and Nordisk Games, framed the partnership as a proactive measure to ensure stability in a volatile market. “Our objective is to cultivate an environment where our teams can thrive without the distraction of operational overhead,” Hansen noted. “By leveraging Avalanche’s established publishing infrastructure alongside Supermassive’s narrative expertise, we are creating a symbiotic ecosystem that prioritizes innovation.”
Leveraging Proven Publishing Expertise
Avalanche Studios Group brings a wealth of experience to this partnership, particularly in managing long-term live-service titles. Stefanía Halldórsdóttir, CEO of Avalanche, highlighted the studio’s track record as a cornerstone of this new publishing mandate. She pointed to the enduring success of theHunter: Call of the Wild, which continues to engage over two million active monthly players nearly a decade after its initial release, as a testament to their robust distribution and community management capabilities.
This collaboration represents a strategic shift for Nordisk Games, moving away from siloed operations toward a more integrated, resource-efficient model designed to sustain high-quality output in an increasingly competitive global gaming landscape.
