A Whimsical Escape: Discovering ‘Matcha Mountain’
Imagine a sanctuary where the landscape is perpetually vibrant and the supply of matcha lattes is infinite. That is the idyllic setting of Matcha Mountain, the latest standout project to emerge from the world-renowned Gobelins animation institute in Paris. Following our recent feature on Direction les Champs, this new short film serves as a testament to the high caliber of artistry currently being cultivated by the next generation of animators.
The Creative Vision Behind the Animation
Crafted by a dedicated team of six students as their final graduation piece, Matcha Mountain utilizes a gentle, hand-drawn 2D aesthetic that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The visual language of the film is reminiscent of the lush, atmospheric storytelling found in classic Studio Ghibli works. In fact, the project features the creative touch of Zijin Chen, who was also behind the sublime Miyazaki tribute short we highlighted last year.
A Story of Unexpected Bonds
The narrative centers on an elderly woman living a solitary, peaceful existence atop the titular mountain. Her quiet life takes a turn when she discovers and nurses an injured balloon dog back to health-a creature with a peculiar, insatiable craving for matcha-infused treats. As their bond deepens, the film introduces a subtle, encroaching tension that threatens their serene lifestyle.
Clocking in at just six minutes, the film relies entirely on visual storytelling, eschewing dialogue to let the animation and score carry the emotional weight. It is a masterclass in pacing and character design, proving that even the shortest runtime can leave a lasting impression. With the global animation industry seeing a 15% increase in independent short film distribution over the last two years, projects like this highlight why student-led productions are becoming essential viewing for cinephiles. We highly encourage you to support these emerging filmmakers by watching the full short below.
