A New Chapter for Springfield’s Favorite Shopkeeper
After a prolonged absence from the spotlight, the Kwik-E-Mart’s most recognizable face has officially returned to the streets of Springfield. During the second installment of Season 38, “The Simpsons” reintroduced Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, marking a pivotal shift for the long-running animated series. This comeback features a fresh vocal performance by Sunil Malhotra, an accomplished actor whose extensive resume includes notable contributions to major franchises like “Mortal Kombat 11” and “The Legend of Korra.”
The Evolution of a Controversial Icon
The transition to a new voice actor represents a major milestone in the show’s history. For decades, Apu was previously voiced by Hank Azaria until 2020, at which point the actor stepped down from the role. His departure followed a period of intense public discourse ignited by the 2017 documentary “The Problem with Apu.”
In that film, comedian Hari Kondabolu examined the cultural impact of the character, arguing that the depiction of an Indian immigrant in mainstream media relied heavily on reductive tropes. Kondabolu’s critique highlighted that Azaria’s performance-while intended as a comedic caricature-often functioned as a “parody of a parody.” He suggested that such portrayals, much like the exaggerated nature of characters such as Bumblebee Man, contributed to harmful real-world stereotypes. By casting an actor of Indian heritage, the production team appears to be navigating a path toward modernizing the character while acknowledging the complex legacy that has surrounded him for years.
