WARDOGS Season 2: A Rocky Launch Amidst Progression Controversies
The latest update for WARDOGS, Season 2, arrived last week with high expectations. While the title continues to maintain a robust community-recently hitting a peak of nearly 289,000 concurrent players-the reception has been surprisingly lukewarm. Currently, the game’s Steam rating has dipped into “Mixed” territory, as the community voices growing frustrations regarding persistent issues like rampant cheating and the absence of region-locking features.
The Progression Imbalance: Why the “Fresh Start” Failed
Beyond technical grievances, a significant design choice by Bulkhead Studios has sparked backlash. To incentivize participation, the developers introduced a bonus system for the “Blue Team,” granting players accelerated XP and currency gains. While intended to boost engagement, this mechanic backfired, allowing a large portion of the player base to bypass the intended progression curve and acquire top-tier equipment in record time.
This shortcut is particularly contentious because the developers had previously executed a full progress wipe from Season 0. The goal of that reset was to ensure a fair, balanced playing field for all participants. By inadvertently fast-tracking the acquisition of high-level assets, the studio effectively nullified the impact of that reset.
Developer Response and Future Adjustments
Bulkhead Studios has acknowledged the misstep, admitting that their attempt to refine the game’s balance through accelerated progression was a strategic error. In a recent statement, the team noted, “Season 2 was meant to be a fresh start, and for a lot of you it hasn’t felt like one. We sped up progression deliberately and tried to balance the game better, as set out in the patch notes, but it was the wrong call.”
The developers conceded that the current state of the game is skewed, noting that players are securing powerful items-such as Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) and Tier 4 armor-far too quickly. This rapid advancement has created a power gap that undermines the long-term goals of the milsim experience. As the studio looks to rectify these imbalances, the community remains watchful to see how they will recalibrate the economy and progression systems moving forward.
