The Intersection of Harajuku Nostalgia and Avant-Garde Design
Mikio Sakabe recently transformed La Foret-the iconic Harajuku retail hub synonymous with youth culture-into a surreal theater for his latest collection. His creative vision centered on the pursuit of escapism, drawing inspiration from the niche world of Japanese gravure magazines. These publications, which often feature idealized, wide-eyed models in provocative attire, provided the conceptual framework for what Sakabe described as a “mall-based swimsuit exhibition.”
Deconstructing the Retail Experience
For Sakabe, the choice of venue was deeply intentional. He noted that the atmosphere of a Japanese fashion mall carries a dual identity: it is simultaneously vibrant and performative, yet tinged with a subtle, underlying melancholy. To emphasize this juxtaposition, the runway was intentionally staged with remnants of consumer culture, such as scattered beverage containers and discarded coffee cups, grounding the high-fashion display in a gritty, lived-in reality.
The collection itself was a study in contrasts. The lineup oscillated between minimalist swimwear and Sakabe’s signature aesthetic: deconstructed, oversized tailoring. These garments featured aggressive slashes, complex layering, and whimsical embellishments, including frilled textures and elongated, rabbit-ear-like appendages that challenged traditional silhouettes.
Signature Elements and Commercial Success
The styling remained consistent with Sakabe’s recent creative trajectory, featuring his trademark helmet-style wigs that obscure the models’ faces-a stylistic choice he continues to favor for its mysterious, uniform effect.
Footwear played a pivotal role in the presentation, with models sporting the distinctive bubble-soled sneakers from his label, Grounds. Since its inception in 2019, the footwear brand has seen explosive growth, evolving from a niche project into a global operation that now supports a workforce of approximately 100 individuals. This success highlights a broader trend in the industry where independent designers are increasingly leveraging specialized, high-tech accessories to anchor their broader fashion narratives.
