Side Strengthens Chinese Market Foothold with Roboto Entertainment Acquisition
In a strategic move to bolster its creative capabilities within the Asian market, the services provider Side has officially expanded its footprint in China. This growth initiative is headlined by the acquisition of the specialized art outsourcing firm, Roboto Entertainment, alongside the launch of a brand-new studio facility.
Strategic Leadership and Regional Expansion
The acquisition brings the Chengdu-based Roboto Entertainment-established in 2014 by industry veteran Andrea Cordella-directly into the Side ecosystem. As part of this transition, Cordella has stepped into a dual leadership role: he will serve as the Global Head of Art for Side while simultaneously overseeing operations as the Studio Head for the newly minted Chengdu location.
This expansion is particularly timely as the Chinese gaming market continues to evolve. According to recent industry data, China remains the world’s largest gaming market by revenue, with a growing emphasis on high-fidelity visual assets for both mobile and console platforms. By integrating Roboto’s expertise in environment design and world-building, Side is positioning itself to better serve the increasing demand for AAA-quality visual production.
A Shared Vision for Interactive Art
Reflecting on the merger, Cordella emphasized that the decision was driven by a deep alignment of corporate culture and creative philosophy. “From my initial discussions with Deborah and the broader Side leadership, it was clear that our core values were perfectly synchronized,” Cordella noted.
He further highlighted the unique nature of the medium, stating, “We are committed to pushing the boundaries of excellence. Video games occupy a singular space in the arts, where the player is an active participant alongside the developer. We intend to bring that same level of immersive creativity to every project, now leveraging a global network to support developers on a diverse array of titles.”
Synergy Across the Global Network
The new Chengdu studio is not intended to operate in a vacuum. Instead, it is designed to function as a critical node within Side’s existing infrastructure. Cordella and his team are set to work in close coordination with Side’s established Shanghai operations, creating a robust pipeline for art production that bridges local expertise with global project requirements.
By combining Roboto’s proven track record in world-building with Side’s international reach, the company is well-equipped to handle the complexities of modern game development, from intricate environment modeling to large-scale asset integration.
