Residents across Spain’s Balearic Islands — including Ibiza — are increasingly calling for limits on tourism as concerns about overcrowding, housing costs, and infrastructure pressure continue to grow.

According to reporting from the Majorca Daily Bulletin, a recent survey of 2,008 residents across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera found strong support for new regulations aimed at reducing tourism pressure on the islands.

The poll revealed that 69.1% of respondents support introducing a cap on tourist numbers, while 68.4% favor restricting tourist accommodation and businesses catering primarily to visitors.

Even stronger support emerged for regulating short-term rentals, with 80.5% of residents backing limits on holiday lets, a measure many believe could help address rising housing costs for locals.

Growing Frustration with Overtourism

The debate around tourism has intensified in recent years as visitor numbers to the Balearic Islands continue to rise. Ibiza — one of the world’s most famous nightlife destinations — sees millions of visitors each year despite having a relatively small year-round population.

Residents increasingly cite overcrowded streets, rising living costs, and pressure on natural resources as major concerns. According to the same survey cited by the Majorca Daily Bulletin, 75.6% of residents believe the islands currently receive too many tourists annually, highlighting a growing sentiment that the current tourism model may no longer be sustainable.
