One of France’s most beloved music traditions looked a little different this year.

As Europe endured an intense early summer heat wave, French authorities imposed restrictions on public alcohol consumption during Fête de la Musique celebrations in regions placed under the country’s highest heat alert. The move came as temperatures approached 104°F (40°C) in parts of the country and officials scrambled to reduce health risks associated with dehydration and large public gatherings.

The annual festival, held every June 21, transforms cities and towns across France into giant open-air stages with free performances spanning every genre imaginable. Despite the extreme conditions, authorities opted to move forward with festivities while implementing additional safety measures.

Heat Wave Prompts Unusual Restrictions

Following a crisis meeting, French officials announced that public alcohol consumption would be prohibited in departments under red heat alerts. Organizers of state-sponsored events were also instructed not to serve alcohol, with the government citing concerns over dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

While outdoor sporting events were canceled in Paris, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that Fête de la Musique would continue as planned. The city prepared for millions of attendees by increasing access to drinking water and keeping parks open around the clock to provide relief from the heat.

Several municipalities canceled celebrations altogether, while others modified schedules and increased emergency resources to accommodate the unusually high temperatures.

Europe Swelters Under Historic Temperatures

France wasn’t alone in facing dangerous conditions. The heat wave stretched across much of Western Europe, impacting Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Temperatures surpassed 100°F (38°C) in several countries, with parts of France expected to experience some of the hottest days ever recorded in June. More than half of France’s departments were placed under red alerts, while schools closed, transportation systems experienced disruptions, and iconic landmarks including the Eiffel Tower adjusted operations.

Authorities throughout Europe issued warnings about heat exhaustion and dehydration as climate experts pointed to increasingly frequent and intense heat waves across the continent.

Music Festivals Face New Climate Challenges

While Fête de la Musique is not a traditional music festival, the restrictions highlight a growing reality for live events worldwide.

Extreme weather has increasingly affected festivals and concerts over the past several years. From high winds forcing cancellations at Coachella to flooding, lightning delays, and record-breaking temperatures impacting events throughout Europe and North America, organizers are being forced to adapt to conditions that are becoming more common.

This year’s Fête de la Musique demonstrated that even one of Europe’s most iconic musical celebrations isn’t immune to the effects of a changing climate.

A French Tradition Since 1982

Created in 1982 by then-Culture Minister Jack Lang,Fête de la Musique has become one of France’s most recognizable cultural traditions. Every June 21, professional musicians and amateurs alike take to the streets to perform free concerts, with celebrations spreading far beyond France to cities around the world.

Despite the restrictions and extreme temperatures, millions still gathered to celebrate music, proving that even record heat couldn’t stop one of the world’s largest annual musical celebrations.
