CONVRGENCE: From Legal Hurdles to Full VR Launch
The wait for the full version of the post-apocalyptic extraction shooter CONVRGENCE is nearly over. Developer Monkey-With-a-Bomb has officially confirmed that the title will exit SteamVR Early Access on September 17. This announcement was accompanied by a fresh trailer showcased during this week’s VR Games Showcase, highlighting the polished state of the game ahead of its 1.0 launch.
A Challenging Path to Development
The journey to this release has been anything but conventional. The project serves as a spiritual successor to the developer’s previous title, Paradox of Hope, which debuted in 2022. While that initial project garnered attention for its atmospheric, Metro-inspired gameplay, it eventually faced significant legal scrutiny regarding copyright concerns. To sidestep a protracted and costly legal conflict, the solo developer made the difficult decision to pull the game from digital storefronts in 2023.
Rather than abandoning the project entirely, the creator committed to a complete creative pivot. The goal was to salvage the core mechanics and technical foundation of the original work while stripping away the elements that mirrored the Metro franchise too closely. This transformation birthed CONVRGENCE, a title that has spent the last two years refining its own unique identity within the competitive VR survival genre.
Refining the Extraction Shooter Formula
In the current landscape of VR gaming, extraction shooters have become a staple, with titles like Into the Radius setting a high bar for immersion. CONVRGENCE distinguishes itself by focusing on high-stakes scavenging in a desolate, hostile environment. After more than 24 months of iterative updates during its Early Access phase, the game has evolved significantly, incorporating player feedback to balance its survival systems and combat encounters.
As the VR market continues to grow-with recent industry reports suggesting that standalone and PCVR engagement remains robust-the transition to a full release marks a critical milestone for Monkey-With-a-Bomb. By moving past its turbulent origins, the developer is now poised to deliver a standalone experience that stands firmly on its own merits.
