The Rifted Skies: DreamVR’s High-Intensity Roguelite Prioritizes Physical Immersion

During the latest VR Games Showcase, developer DreamVR pulled back the curtain on its debut consumer virtual reality project: The Rifted Skies. This action-packed roguelite is slated for an Early Access launch on Meta Quest and SteamVR platforms later this year, with a subsequent rollout planned for Pico headsets.

A Shift from Location-Based Roots to Home VR

DreamVR is no newcomer to the industry, having spent years refining its craft in the niche sector of location-based entertainment (LBE) VR. However, The Rifted Skies represents a significant pivot. Rather than relying on traditional thumbstick-based movement-which can often lead to motion sickness or a “disconnected” feeling-the studio is doubling down on natural, real-world physical movement to drive the gameplay loop.

Gameplay Mechanics: Motion as the Primary Controller

In The Rifted Skies, your body is the primary interface. The game eschews standard button-mashing in favor of kinetic input:

  • Locomotion: Players navigate the environment by swinging their arms to sprint and performing upward gestures to leap.
  • Combat: Parrying, executing charged strikes, and launching attacks are all tied to specific physical motions.
  • Traversal: High-speed maneuvers, including wall-running, gliding, sliding, and grappling, are designed to be performed at full intensity, ensuring the gameplay remains as physically demanding as it is fast-paced.

Surviving the Consuming Rift

The narrative backdrop places players in a desolate, forgotten world currently being devoured by a cryptic, encroaching rift. As you explore, you must balance the urgency of outrunning this encroaching void with the necessity of fighting off the mutated creatures left in its wake. The roguelite structure ensures high replayability, featuring three distinct biomes, each culminating in a challenging boss encounter. Throughout each run, players will discover temporary power-ups and permanent ability unlocks to bolster their chances of survival.

The Philosophy of “VR-Native” Design

Victor Tsai, the Game Director at DreamVR, emphasizes that the studio’s primary goal is to eliminate the “controller barrier” that often hampers immersion. According to Tsai, the development process is governed by a strict internal litmus test:

“In many VR games, I found myself missing the very essence of VR, when every button press broke my immersion just a little. With The Rifted Skies, we wanted players to feel like they’re inside the game, not like a person with controllers. Every mechanic goes through two questions: is it VR-native enough? Is it comfortable enough? If either answer is not a strong YES, we go back and redesign it.”

Availability and Launch Details

As the VR market continues to grow-with recent industry reports suggesting that active VR users are increasingly seeking “fitness-adjacent” gaming experiences-The Rifted Skies is well-positioned to capitalize on the demand for active play. Interested players can add the title to their wishlists on Steam and the Meta Quest Store. The Early Access launch is currently scheduled for Fall 2026.
