The Rise of Synthetic Audio on Streaming Services
The landscape of digital music distribution is undergoing a seismic shift. Deezer, the prominent Paris-headquartered streaming service, has officially confirmed that artificial intelligence-produced content has officially crossed a major threshold, now comprising over 50% of the total daily track submissions on its platform.
A Rapid Acceleration in AI Output
Recent data reveals that approximately 90,000 AI-crafted songs are being uploaded to the service every single day. This surge represents a significant climb from the figures observed just a few months ago in April, when AI-generated content sat at 75,000 tracks daily, or roughly 44% of the total volume. As highlighted by Music Business Worldwide, this milestone marks the inaugural instance where machine-generated compositions have eclipsed human-authored music in terms of daily upload frequency.
To put this into perspective, the sheer volume of AI-generated content is akin to a digital “gold rush,” where automated tools allow users to flood streaming libraries with content at a speed that human musicians-who require time for composition, recording, and production-simply cannot match.
Protecting the Ecosystem from Automated Clutter
In response to this influx, Deezer is doubling down on its commitment to preserve the integrity of its catalog. The company has reaffirmed its strategy to identify, remove, and demonetise synthetic tracks. This approach is consistent with their earlier policy of withholding royalty payments from approximately 85% of AI-generated music, a process facilitated by their proprietary AI detection tools.
Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, emphasized the company’s proactive stance in a recent press release. “For nearly two years, Deezer has stood at the forefront of the battle against streaming fraud and the dilution of royalty pools caused by AI-generated content,” Lanternier stated. “With half of our daily uploads now originating from AI, we are implementing further measures to protect the intellectual property of songwriters and artists, ensuring our platform remains a space for music that truly resonates with our listeners.”
Industry-Wide Implications
The technology behind these safeguards is not limited to Deezer’s own app. The company launched its sophisticated AI detection suite across 20 different streaming platforms this past June. As the industry grapples with the democratization of music creation, these tools serve as a critical filter, distinguishing between authentic human artistry and the rapidly expanding ocean of algorithmic output.
