Recently, Suffolk County, New York, identified three probable cases of tularemia, a bacterial infection colloquially known as “rabbit fever.” This development has brought renewed attention to a disease that, while uncommon, can be severe if not addressed promptly.
Tularemia is triggered by the pathogen *Francisella tularensis*. In nature, this bacterium circulates primarily among small mammals and rodents. Ticks and other biting insects act as vectors, acquiring the bacteria through blood meals from infected hosts and subsequently transmitting it to humans.

It is important to note that tularemia is not a communicable disease; it does not transmit through human-to-human contact. Instead, infection typically occurs through direct interaction with contaminated wildlife or via the bite of an infected tick.
According to Sharon Nachman, MD, division chief of pediatric infectious disease at Stony Brook Medicine, the moniker “rabbit fever” is derived from the fact that rabbits serve as the primary reservoir for the bacteria. Dr. Nachman emphasizes that while the infection is considered rare in mammals, including humans, the recent cluster of cases serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of zoonotic diseases.
