Still Here Brings New York Denim Culture to the West Coast
The iconic New York-based denim label, Still Here, is officially trading the East Coast hustle for the laid-back energy of Los Angeles. Following the successful launch of their fourth boutique in New York just last month, the brand is marking a major milestone by establishing its first-ever retail footprint outside of its home city, landing directly on the fashion-forward Melrose Avenue.
From Digital Roots to Physical Expansion
When founders Sonia and Maurice Mosseri launched the label in 2018, their vision was primarily digital. Physical retail wasn’t initially part of the roadmap. However, the overwhelming success of their 2022 Nolita flagship served as a turning point, proving that their customer base craved a tactile, in-person experience. This strategic shift has been rapid; by 2026, the brand will have scaled from three to five brick-and-mortar locations, solidifying its presence in the competitive premium denim market.
Despite this physical growth, the product lineup remains anchored in the brand’s core identity. Shoppers in Los Angeles can expect to find the signature silhouettes that built the brand’s reputation, including:
* The Cool Jean: Featuring the brand’s trademark drawstring toggle.
* The Sport Jean: A waistband-free design that has become a staple among high-profile celebrities.
* The Everyday Jean: A timeless cut that serves as the foundation of the collection.
Navigating the Retail Landscape
The brand’s journey to retail dominance was anything but linear. In 2019, the Mosseris achieved an early victory when they secured a spot at the legendary Barneys, selling through their initial inventory of 200 pairs in just ten days. However, the retail landscape shifted abruptly when Barneys filed for bankruptcy, followed by the global pandemic, which effectively froze wholesale orders across the industry.
Forced to pivot, the founders leaned heavily into direct-to-consumer sales via ShopMy. This transition revealed a significant challenge: high return rates. The couple soon realized that the issue wasn’t the design, but the material. Unlike the ubiquitous stretch-denim blends that dominate the current market, Still Here utilizes 100% cotton. This fabric choice offers a more rigid, authentic vintage feel, which requires a different sizing approach than the synthetic-blend jeans most consumers were accustomed to. By educating their audience on the unique fit of non-stretch denim, the brand successfully turned a logistical hurdle into a hallmark of their quality-first philosophy.
