## A New Chapter: Harvey Smith Launches Black Pony Immersive
Following the abrupt shuttering of Arkane Austin by Microsoft in May 2024-a move that displaced nearly 100 talented developers-the industry is witnessing a resilient comeback. Harvey Smith, a visionary whose fingerprints are all over legendary titles like *Deus Ex*, *Dishonored*, and *Prey*, has officially broken his two-year silence. Alongside former Arkane colleague Ben Horne, Smith has unveiled his latest endeavor: Black Pony Immersive.
### Navigating a Challenging Landscape
The timing of this launch is, by the founders’ own admission, far from ideal. In an era where the gaming industry is grappling with widespread layoffs-with over 10,000 jobs lost across the sector in 2023 alone-starting a new venture is a daunting prospect.
“Ben and I picked arguably the most difficult moment in history to establish a game studio,” Smith remarked in a recent interview. “But when you’re faced with that reality, you have to ask yourself: what other path is there?”
### Prioritizing Creative Integrity Over Trends
The journey to secure funding for Black Pony Immersive was fraught with obstacles. The current economic climate for independent developers is notoriously tight, characterized by risk-averse investors and a cooling venture capital market.
Ben Horne, who previously held the role of production director on *Redfall*, noted that the duo faced significant pressure to compromise their vision. During their search for capital, they were frequently approached by entities pushing speculative trends rather than sustainable game design.
“We spent countless hours navigating a brutal fundraising environment,” Horne explained. “We had to walk away from several lucrative offers because they simply didn’t align with our values. We were repeatedly asked, ‘Are you open to integrating blockchain or NFT elements?’ As much as we were desperate to get the studio off the ground, we weren’t willing to sacrifice the integrity of our work for those kinds of models.”
### The Future of Immersive Simulation
Black Pony Immersive is being positioned as a sanctuary for the “immersive sim” genre-a style of gameplay that Smith and his peers have spent decades perfecting. By focusing on player agency, environmental storytelling, and complex systemic interactions, the studio aims to carry the torch of the design philosophies that defined their previous work at Arkane.
As the studio begins its operations, the focus remains on building a team that shares a commitment to high-quality, player-centric experiences, proving that even in a volatile market, there is still a place for developers who prioritize craft over industry fads.
