First Impressions: Stepping Into the Chaos of Payday: Aces High
We recently had the opportunity to dive into the virtual world of Payday: Aces High, the latest project from the team at Fast Travel Games. After spending time in a dedicated media session, we’ve gathered our thoughts on whether this title has the potential to become a staple in the VR shooter genre.
A Cross-Platform Heist Experience
During our session, I teamed up with James Tocchio to tackle the game’s introductory heist. We were joined by Erik and Kris from the development team, who guided us through the mechanics. To test the game’s versatility, we ran the mission across different hardware: James utilized the Meta Quest, while I operated via SteamVR. We documented the entire process, and the resulting footage provides a side-by-side look at how the game performs across these distinct platforms.
Prioritizing Arcade-Style Intensity Over Simulation
Following our gameplay, we spoke with Erik, the Game Director for Aces High, who shed light on the design philosophy behind the project. It is clear that Fast Travel Games has intentionally pivoted toward an arcade-inspired experience. Rather than bogging players down with hyper-realistic, cumbersome controls that require surgical precision, the game prioritizes momentum and high-octane thrills.
This design choice is most evident in how the game handles objectives. For instance, interacting with loot is streamlined; instead of meticulously picking up individual items, players can interact with massive piles of valuables with ease. This keeps the focus squarely on the adrenaline of the firefight and the urgency of the escape, ensuring that the player remains immersed in the action rather than fighting the interface.
With the VR market continuing to expand-recent industry reports suggest that the global VR gaming market is expected to reach over $30 billion by 2028-titles that prioritize “pick-up-and-play” accessibility like Aces High are perfectly positioned to capture a wider audience of friends looking for cooperative fun.
