## Australia’s Music Charts Implement Strict AI Eligibility Standards
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has officially updated its policy regarding artificial intelligence, effectively barring tracks created entirely by AI from appearing on its prestigious music charts. This decision, announced on August 25, ensures that the Top 50 Singles and Albums lists remain reserved for human-led creative works.
### Defining the Boundaries of AI in Music
While fully automated, machine-generated compositions are now excluded, ARIA is not turning its back on technology entirely. Tracks that utilize AI as a supplementary tool remain eligible for chart consideration. However, to qualify, these submissions must prove they are “substantially human-made.”
This distinction is crucial as the industry grapples with the rapid proliferation of generative tools. For a track to be considered, it must not only demonstrate significant human creative input but also pass rigorous checks to ensure there is no evidence of stream or chart manipulation-a growing concern as AI-generated “bot” music floods streaming platforms.
### Aligning with Global Industry Standards
ARIA’s new framework is deeply informed by the joint-proclamation established on July 10. This international initiative, supported by major organizations like the IFPI and the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), focuses on transparency through a standardized labeling program. By adopting these guidelines, ARIA is aligning Australia with a global movement to distinguish between human artistry and synthetic content.
This shift mirrors broader industry trends, such as Apple Music’s recent move to implement tagging systems for AI-assisted recordings, providing listeners with greater clarity regarding the origin of the music they consume.

The motivation behind these rules is to protect the integrity of the creative process. As AI tools become as common as digital audio workstations (DAWs) or synthesizers, the industry is working to define where “assistance” ends and “automation” begins.
“These changes reflect our intent to remain dynamic and promote the human nature of artistry in what is – to say the least – a rapidly developing space,” explained ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd. She emphasized that the charts must evolve to accommodate modern production workflows while ensuring that the core of musical success remains rooted in human expression.
As the landscape of music production shifts, these regulations serve as a safeguard, ensuring that the charts continue to reflect the authentic voices of artists rather than the output of algorithms.
