Revisiting the Underrated Charm of “2 Guns”
While many comic book adaptations dominate the cultural conversation for years, Baltasar Kormákur’s 2013 crime comedy “2 Guns” has largely faded into obscurity. Adapted from the gritty graphic novel series penned by Steven Grant and illustrated by Mateus Santolouco, the film arrived with significant fanfare but struggled to maintain long-term relevance. Despite being the most prominent release during its debut weekend-easily outperforming niche projects like “The Canyons”-it faced stiff competition. The box office landscape at the time was still heavily influenced by the massive success of the “X-Men” sequel “The Wolverine,” which likely siphoned off the audience segment most interested in comic-inspired action.
A Dynamic Duo in a Low-Stakes Thriller
The film thrives on the chemistry between its two leads, offering a breezy, offbeat tone that distinguishes it from the self-serious superhero epics of the era. Denzel Washington steps into the role of DEA Special Agent Robert “Bobby Beans” Trench, sporting a distinctive trilby hat that gives his character a touch of retro-cool. Opposite him is Mark Wahlberg, who portrays U.S. Navy Special Operations Petty Officer 1st Class Michael “Stig” Stigman. Wahlberg leans into his signature screen persona, delivering a performance that feels less like a stretch and more like an amplified version of his own public-facing charisma.
In an era where action movies often rely on heavy CGI and interconnected cinematic universes, “2 Guns” serves as a reminder of the “buddy cop” subgenre’s appeal. While it may not have achieved the legendary status of 80s classics like “Lethal Weapon,” its ability to balance high-stakes undercover operations with lighthearted banter remains a standout feature for those who enjoy character-driven action.
