DJI Evolves Home Robotics: The Romo 2 Series Debuts with Enhanced Security and Mobility
DJI is doubling down on its commitment to the smart home market with the launch of the Romo 2 series. This latest iteration of their robotic vacuum cleaner arrives with significant hardware upgrades, including a quieter motor, increased suction power, and a unique leg-based propulsion system designed to conquer household obstacles that typically trap standard vacuums.
Perhaps the most critical update for privacy-conscious consumers is the introduction of a local-only data mode. This feature directly addresses the serious security flaws that plagued the first Romo’s release, ensuring that sensitive mapping data remains within the home rather than being transmitted to the cloud.
### Two Distinct Designs, One Powerful Engine
The lineup features two variations: the P2, which sports a sleek, transparent chassis, and the A2, which features a traditional opaque finish. Both models utilize advanced navigation sensors capable of detecting objects as minute as 2mm, such as stray charging cables or thin furniture legs. Furthermore, the units are engineered to recognize and navigate around transparent surfaces like floor-to-ceiling mirrors or glass sliding doors-a common pain point for older robotic vacuums.
The Romo 2 also introduces a “human-like reasoning and concept transfer” algorithm. By leveraging machine learning, the device doesn’t just map a room; it remembers the nature of obstacles it has previously encountered, allowing it to adapt its cleaning path more intelligently when it faces new, unfamiliar items in the home.
### Enhanced Mobility and Deep Cleaning
One of the most innovative features of the Romo 2 is its mechanical leg system. These retractable appendages allow the vacuum to physically lift itself over thresholds and small steps up to 4cm (1.5in) high. While it isn’t designed to navigate a full flight of stairs, this capability is a game-changer for homes with uneven flooring or thick room dividers.
Performance metrics have also seen a substantial boost. On carpeted surfaces, the Romo 2 can generate up to 36,000Pa of suction-a figure that rivals high-end cordless stick vacuums. To complement this power, DJI has redesigned the brush and mop arms, extending their reach to ensure that dust and debris are effectively cleared from tight corners and the recessed areas beneath low-profile furniture.
