The Real-Life Setting of the Hit Series
The production has found its perfect home at Ardross Castle. This grand estate serves as the primary stage for both the British iteration of the series and the American version, which features the charismatic Alan Cumming as the host.
Situated in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, the castle is positioned along the River Alness, a short distance north of Inverness. The property is vast, encompassing over 100 acres of sprawling parkland that provides the perfect isolation for the contestants’ high-stakes maneuvering.
A Historical Perspective on Ardross Castle
The history of the estate is as layered as the show’s complex gameplay. The land was originally acquired in the late 18th century by the 1st Duke of Sutherland, who utilized the site to construct a hunting lodge.
However, the architectural marvel seen on screen today is largely the result of a mid-19th-century transformation. In 1845, Sir Alexander Matheson-a prominent Member of Parliament and merchant-purchased the estate for £90,000. Matheson invested heavily in the property, aiming to modernize the grounds and attract agricultural tenants to the region. Today, the castle stands as a testament to Victorian ambition, providing a hauntingly beautiful environment that has become synonymous with the betrayal and strategy of the hit reality franchise.
