Polar Inc. has finally dropped his debut album, Tragicomedy. The Cape Town producer, real name Adam Spence, has been putting out music for more than ten years and has over 120 million streams, but this is his first full album. Across ten tracks he goes back and forth between everything he’s known for, or as he puts it, “happiness and melancholy, cinematic and clubby, emotion and rhythm.”
A handful of singles came out ahead of the album, including “Sympathy” with Anna-Sophia Henry, “Cerulean,” “For You” featuring Nathan Ball and “Slopes” with Hannah Ray. There’s lore behind the last one — he first started “Slopes” while on tour in San Francisco, and named it after the hills he’d been walking around that day. The rest of the album includes “Holding Me Up” with sadHAPPY, “Le Concorde,” “Apricity,” “Catching Fire” featuring ALLKNIGHT, “Agulhas” and the album’s incredible opener “Prima” – a track that started as a chord progression he kept coming back to while making the album until finally finishing it last.
It took Adam Spence more than a decade to make a full-length record, and Tragicomedy sounds like he used every minute of it.
