We’re still recovering from the beast that is Movement Music Festival in the Hart Plaza in Detroit. For over two decades, the festival has showcased some of the best House, Techno, and Drum & Bass artists from Detroit, the US, and around the world. We can’t honor Motor City without mentioning that right before the event, the mayor, Mary Sheffield, selected Memorial Day Week as the official Detroit Techno Week. As stated by DJ Mag, the Techno tradition has a vital impact on the city’s creative talent, innovation, and cultural legacy. Of course, we will mention some of our favorite things that make the Paxahau festival so unique and special.

Respect the Originals

Movement would be nothing without the “OG’s”, Detroit’s finest curators, selectors, and producers. Their love for the craft and for the event itself serves for hours and hours of dancing, honoring the music that speaks out against oppression. As we’ve stated before, House and Techno are more than EDM, but acts of resilience. Names to mention include Stacey Hotwaxx Hale, DJ Minx, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, and DJ Bone.

Every year, the festival sets up an exhibit featuring portraits of the genre’s originators, both living and deceased. Attendees would take their time away from the impressive sound systems of the underground stage to commemorate and pay respects to the individuals who paved the way.

New Gen

All generations are invited to Movement. Artists from all walks of life reached the city day and night to present us with their beats. From quintessential sounds to new and experimental approaches, artists made their statements on each stage. For Techno, the sets that we will always remember include Voices from the Lake, Oscar Mulero, Sara Landry, DJ Bone, Stef Mendesidis, Detroit Techno Militia, ANNA, Lindsey Herbert, 999999999, Miss Bashful, Richie Hawtin, DJ Heartstring b2b X Club, Carl Cox, Boys Noize b2b MCR-T, and Nastia.

When it comes to house, the grooves and funk were alive and well for DJ Minx, Green Velvet, DJ Boring b2b DJ Tennis, Mochakk, Eats Everything, and Octa Octa. When it comes to drum and bass and jungle, we can’t end without mentioning Rudim3ntal and Nia Archives.

The most unique sets of the weekend go to Voices from the Lake and Overmono. With live hardware, atmospheric elements, and higher frequencies, both duos delivered an experience out of this world and made Movement even more special.

The Crowd

We will never get tired of Movement’s audience. Festival goers are extremely respectful, kind, social, and amazing dancers. Between shuffling battles, plenty of “excuse me’s” and “thank you’s“, we had pleasant experiences on every single stage. Even when the rain took a toll on our shoes, everyone kept their spirits high and kept each other safe and sound. This year, the rain did not affect the festival’s programming, and it ran smoothly. The crowd respects the grounds they dance on and each artist that performs for them.

The Afters

All day and all night, Detroit lives up to the name Techno City. Movement may close out each night early (12 am or 11 pm on Monday), but the fun is far from over. Come to the Russell Industrial Center, Movement’s biggest official after-hours spot. Two massive warehouses filled with nasty beats and an underground aesthetic. The gargantuan venue hosted headliners and exclusive after-hours DJs that were not part of the daily lineup. Whether you saw Volvox at the Expo Hall or Matador at Building 6, late-night sets reigned supreme all weekend. Other official iconic afterparty venues include the Spot Lite, TV Lounge, Lincoln Factory, and the Magic Stick.

All in All

A culturally rich festival, with top-notch production, amazing afterparties, within a city that breathes Techno, what else could we ever ask for? Movement 2026 remains one of EDMTunes’ favorite independent festivals. We can’t wait to be back next Memorial Day Weekend.
