Control Resonant: Expanding the Scope of the Federal Bureau of Control
Remedy Entertainment is setting the bar exceptionally high for its upcoming title, Control Resonant. Touted by the studio as their most expansive and ambitious project to date, the game promises to dwarf its predecessor in both scale and depth. In a recent rapid-fire interview with MinnMax, director Mikael Kasurinen confirmed that players should prepare for a significantly longer journey through the Bureau’s shifting corridors, though the exact hour count remains a mystery.
A Shift in Narrative and Mechanical Design
While the game utilizes a chapter-based structure to organize its narrative, Kasurinen emphasizes that the experience is designed to feel seamless rather than segmented. This fluid approach to storytelling is matched by a bold evolution in combat mechanics. While the game’s atmospheric DNA remains rooted in the eerie, bureaucratic surrealism of the Southern Reach Trilogy and the investigative mystery of The X-Files, the moment-to-moment gameplay has pivoted toward high-octane intensity. Drawing inspiration from the aggressive, momentum-driven combat of DOOM (2016) and the precise, rhythmic parry-and-strike systems found in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Control Resonant aims to be a much more demanding test of player reflexes.
Mastering the Aberrant Forms
A core pillar of the new gameplay loop involves the “Aberrant” forms-specialized combat states that players can adopt. Kasurinen highlighted the Hammer as his personal favorite, but acquiring these forms is no simple task. Players will need to scavenge for specific resources scattered throughout the environment to unlock and upgrade these powerful manifestations. This resource-gathering loop adds a layer of strategic exploration, encouraging players to venture into the most dangerous corners of the map to bolster their arsenal.
Accessibility and the Remedy Connected Universe
For those worried about the barrier to entry, Remedy has clarified that prior knowledge of the Control: AWE expansion is not required to grasp the plot of Control Resonant. The game is designed to stand on its own merits. Regarding the much-discussed “Remedy Connected Universe,” fans of Alan Wake should temper their expectations. When asked to quantify the presence of the writer’s influence on a scale of one to ten, Kasurinen offered a modest “2.5.” While the shadow of Alan Wake is never entirely absent from the reality of the Bureau, his presence remains a subtle, lingering threat rather than a central focus.
Prepare for Launch
Control Resonant is scheduled to arrive on September 24th, bringing its mind-bending environments to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Early gameplay showcases have already provided a glimpse into the opening hours of Dylan’s journey, where players are granted the agency to select their starting Aberrant form. These previews also highlight the game’s late-stage traversal, where surreal, gravity-defying navigation becomes essential to survival. With the industry seeing a trend toward longer, more replayable single-player experiences-often exceeding the 20-to-30-hour mark for completionists-Control Resonant appears poised to deliver a substantial, high-fidelity experience that pushes the boundaries of the supernatural action genre.
