Project Awakening Development Will Now “Really Accelerate”, Says Studio

Project Awakening Resurrected: Cygames Shifts to Unreal Engine 5 for Ambitious RPG

After years of radio silence, the long-gestating action RPG Project Awakening is officially back on the front burner. Originally teased in 2016, the title has spent much of the last decade in development limbo. However, recent insights from Japanese developer Cygames suggest that the project is finally gaining significant momentum.

A Unified Development Force

In a recent feature with CGWorld, developer Tomino Kimihiro confirmed that the studio is ramping up production efforts. A key factor in this acceleration is the strategic reallocation of talent. Following the successful launch and post-launch support of Granblue Fantasy: Relink, the team members responsible for that title have transitioned over to bolster the Project Awakening crew. This collaborative effort now spans both the Tokyo and Osaka offices, creating a unified front to push the game toward completion.

Transitioning to Unreal Engine 5

Perhaps the most significant technical update is the studio’s decision to pivot away from their proprietary Cyllista engine. Cygames has officially migrated Project Awakening to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. This shift is driven by the studio’s uncompromising vision for “hyper-photorealism.” By leveraging the advanced lighting, geometry, and physics capabilities of UE5, the team aims to create a visual fidelity that was previously unattainable, setting a new benchmark for the studio’s aesthetic standards.

Tactical Combat and Weighty Realism

While fans of Granblue Fantasy: Relink might expect a fast-paced, arcade-style experience, Kimihiro clarified that Project Awakening will offer a distinct departure in terms of gameplay feel. The combat is intentionally designed to be more deliberate and methodical.

“We’ve opted for a slower tempo to allow players to actively process enemy telegraphs,” Kimihiro noted. “The goal is to make every dodge and block feel like a conscious, tactical decision rather than a reflex-based spam.”

This “weighty” approach extends to the game’s physics and animation systems:

  • Dynamic Terrain Interaction: Combat animations will adapt based on the environment. A sword swing performed on flat ground will differ significantly from one executed on uneven or sloped terrain.
  • Living Enemies: Rather than relying on canned “death” animations, monsters will exhibit reactive behavior. For instance, a downed creature might attempt to strike at the player from the ground, emphasizing a sense of biological realism and unpredictability.

A Long Road to Release

The journey of Project Awakening has been marked by sporadic updates. While the studio briefly touched upon the game’s status in April 2024-reassuring fans that it had not been canceled-the last substantial look at the title remains the 2018 gameplay trailer. That footage, which showcased a knight battling a massive, dragon-like entity, highlighted the early focus on momentum-based combat that the team is now refining with modern technology.

With the recent success of the Endless Ragnarok expansion for Granblue Fantasy: Relink-which introduced a challenging roguelite mode and expanded endgame tiers-Cygames has proven it can deliver high-quality action experiences. As the studio shifts its full focus to Project Awakening, the industry is watching closely to see if this ambitious title can finally deliver on the promise it made nearly a decade ago.
