The Future of Digital Archiving: Why Online Titles Remain a Challenge for GOG

The gaming community often dreams of a world where digital history is immune to the “vaulting” practices seen in titles like Destiny 2. While GOG has made significant strides in safeguarding classic software, the platform has recently shed light on the technical and logistical hurdles preventing them from extending their Preservation Program to live-service and online-only multiplayer games.

Understanding the GOG Preservation Program

At its core, the GOG Preservation Program is designed to ensure that older titles remain playable on modern hardware, regardless of whether the original publisher continues to support them. A prime example of this success is the Warcraft series; even after these games were officially delisted elsewhere, GOG stepped in to maintain compatibility and functionality for players.

It is important to distinguish between games currently sold on GOG and those under the official Preservation Program. While the storefront does host online multiplayer titles-such as King of Fighters XIV Galaxy Edition-these are typically maintained through third-party ports rather than GOG’s internal preservation infrastructure.

The Hurdle of Live-Service Architecture

In a candid discussion with RPGSite, GOG’s Marcin Paczyński addressed the possibility of bringing titles like Capcom’s Monster Hunter series into the fold. Paczyński expressed a personal desire to see these games preserved, yet he admitted that the team has not yet cracked the code for integrating online-dependent titles.

The primary obstacle is the reliance on proprietary server infrastructure. Unlike single-player games, which can be “wrapped” or patched to run on modern operating systems, online games are tethered to external servers. When a developer shuts down these servers, the game effectively ceases to exist. For a platform like GOG to preserve such a title, they would need to either host the servers themselves or develop a way to emulate the online environment-a task that is currently beyond the scope of their existing preservation framework.

Why Preservation Matters More Than Ever

The industry’s current trend of “vaulting” content-where developers remove playable expansions or entire campaigns from games-has sparked a massive debate regarding digital ownership. If GOG could successfully adapt its program to handle online-only titles, it would provide a vital safety net for games that are currently at the mercy of publisher whims.

As of 2024, the Video Game History Foundation estimates that nearly 87% of classic video games are commercially unavailable, highlighting the urgency of these preservation efforts. If the industry continues to shift toward cloud-based and live-service models, the work GOG is doing today will be the only thing standing between modern gaming history and total digital erasure.
