Starbucks Introduces Effervescence to Its Beverage Lineup
The coffee giant is shaking up its beverage strategy by introducing a bubbly twist to its well-known menu. Starbucks is currently experimenting with carbonated iterations of its signature Refreshers, a line of iced tea and fruit juice blends that have been a staple for the brand since their debut over a decade ago.
Introducing the “Spritzers” Collection
During the company’s recent third-quarter earnings call, CEO Brian Niccol unveiled the initiative to investors. As noted by Business Insider, the company is branding these new carbonated offerings as “Spritzers.”
Niccol expressed enthusiasm regarding the innovation, highlighting the team’s ability to craft flavors that resonate deeply with modern consumer preferences. He noted that the Refresher platform has remained a robust performer for the company, consistently driving engagement throughout the previous quarter.
Pilot Program Details and Market Expansion
The shift toward carbonation reflects a broader industry trend where consumers are increasingly seeking functional, sparkling beverages. By integrating sparkling water into their existing fruit-forward profiles, Starbucks aims to capture a segment of the market that currently favors the mouthfeel and refreshment of carbonated drinks, similar to the rise of sparkling waters and craft sodas in the retail space.
Beginning July 28, the company will launch a pilot program across 100 select locations. Residents in Austin, San Antonio, and St. Louis will be the first to sample the new Spritz collection.
What’s on the Menu?
While the traditional, non-carbonated Refreshers will remain available, the test locations will feature a specialized menu of sparkling alternatives. The lineup includes:
- Super Mango Energy Refresher
- Sparkling Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade Energy Refresher
- Sparkling Mango Strawberry Lemonade Energy Refresher
- Sparkling Strawberry Açaí Lemonade Energy Refresher
This move follows the brand’s ongoing efforts to modernize its popular Refreshers, ensuring they remain competitive in a fast-paced beverage market that increasingly prioritizes variety and sensory experience.
