The marketing stunt, which involved draping a massive advertisement over the iconic Gaslamp Quarter arch, proceeded despite explicit warnings and a formal denial from local municipal authorities.
### Defying City Regulations
The decision to move forward with the installation was met with immediate pushback from city officials. According to reports from the San Diego Union-Tribune (via Gizmodo), the city had rejected the permit application, citing critical safety concerns. Officials feared that the structure would impede pedestrian traffic and create a bottleneck during the massive influx of attendees that defines the annual convention.
Rather than pivoting to an alternative location, Marvel and their advertising partner, Elevue Outdoor, opted to proceed with the installation. This choice triggered a series of escalating daily penalties as the signage remained in place throughout the event.
### A Pricey Promotional Strategy
The situation highlights the tension between aggressive corporate marketing and public safety protocols. Richard Berg, a spokesperson for the city, noted that the contractor was fully aware of the risks involved, stating, “The contractor knowingly created a safety risk and refused to address it, and was cited and fined accordingly.”
