Toy maker Mattel has established Mattel Game Studios to develop, publish, and operate titles based on the company’s brand portfolio.

The nascent organisation will be a subsidiary of Mattel Digital Studios—the company’s broader digital games organisation spanning self-published titles and licensed projects—and unite almost 300 video game workers across Los Angeles and Hangzhou.

Mattel Games Studios will oversee Mattel’s existing mobile portfolio and publish new free-to-play smartphone titles. It will also, notably, oversee the production of original experiences on popular user-generated content platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite.

It’s a notable move for the entertainment giant, which owns major brands such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, Uno, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, and Thomas and Friends.

The news comes shortly after Mattel acquired mobile studio Mattel163 from Chinese conglomerate NetEase at a valuation of $318 million. In a post on Facebook, Mattel163 confirmed it will now become a part of Mattel Games Studios.
