## ARIA Implements Strict Guidelines to Safeguard Human Artistry in Music Charts
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has officially overhauled its Charts Code of Practice, establishing a firm boundary against music created entirely by artificial intelligence. Starting with the chart dated Monday, August 31-set for publication this Friday, August 28-tracks produced exclusively through generative AI will no longer be permitted to rank on the official ARIA charts.
### Defining the Human Element in Modern Production
This policy shift is designed to protect the integrity of the charts while acknowledging the nuanced reality of modern music production. Under the new framework, a track is only considered eligible for charting if it is fundamentally the product of human creativity.
To maintain clarity, ARIA is adopting the international labeling standards introduced by the global music industry on July 10. This distinction is crucial: it separates “AI-assisted” music-where technology serves as a tool for a human creator-from “AI-generated” music, where the composition is produced wholesale by algorithms. As the industry grapples with this, recent data from the IFPI suggests that while AI adoption in creative workflows is rising, 75% of music fans still prioritize human-authored lyrics and melodies as the primary driver of their listening habits.
### Enforcement and Accountability Measures
The updated code grants ARIA significant oversight authority. The organization now reserves the right to:
* Reject submissions deemed ineligible under the new AI criteria.
* Retroactively remove tracks from the charts if they are found to be non-compliant.
* Recalibrate chart positions following the removal of ineligible content.
* Rescind official accreditations or “Number One” awards previously issued to tracks that fail to meet these human-authorship standards.
While these measures are stringent, the process includes a safeguard for creators. Artists and their management teams maintain the right to appeal an exclusion, provided they can present verifiable evidence demonstrating the human-led nature of their production process.

She noted that while the industry has long embraced digital tools to enhance production, there is a clear distinction between using software to polish a performance and relying on services that synthesize music based on the existing catalogs of other artists.
