“Diablo 5 presents a world where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has emerged victorious,” Shely explained. “The apocalypse is no longer a looming threat; it is the status quo. Countless heroes have risen throughout history to challenge the Lord of Terror, and every single one of them has failed. Now, Diablo occupies the throne of Westmarch, having successfully subjugated the entire Western continent.”
The Century-Long Gap: Why Diablo V Follows Diablo 4
The narrative choice to jump forward 100 years after the events of Diablo 4 serves a specific purpose. By establishing a century of darkness, the development team is creating a “post-failure” environment. This shift allows for a complete reimagining of the world’s geography and political structure, as the remnants of humanity struggle to survive under the absolute rule of the Prime Evil. While Diablo 4 continues to receive seasonal updates and maintains a dedicated player base, the team is clearly looking toward a future where the stakes are fundamentally different.
