“I’m tired of being your shadow.” With this haunting declaration, Mubi has unveiled the domestic trailer for Minotaur, the latest cinematic achievement from acclaimed Russian auteur Andrey Zvyagintsev. Known for his surgical precision in dissecting human fragility in films like Leviathan and the devastating Loveless, Zvyagintsev returns to the screen with a narrative that feels both intimate and suffocatingly vast.
From Classic Roots to Modern Decay
While Minotaur draws its narrative DNA from Claude Chabrol’s 1969 French classic The Unfaithful Wife-a story famously reimagined in the 2002 Hollywood thriller Unfaithful-Zvyagintsev’s iteration is far from a standard remake. Instead, he uses the familiar framework of a crumbling marriage to explore the erosion of the human spirit.
The story centers on Gleb, a high-level executive navigating the cold, bureaucratic landscape of a provincial Russian town in 2022. As he prepares to dismantle the livelihoods of his staff through mass layoffs, his own domestic foundation collapses upon the discovery of his wife’s infidelity. It is a masterclass in irony: a man who holds the power to destroy others’ lives finds himself powerless to control his own.
A Global Festival Darling
Following its buzzy debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Minotaur has solidified its status as a must-see event on the international circuit. The film is currently making its rounds through the most prestigious festivals globally, including stops at Telluride, Toronto, New York, Zurich, and London. Critics have noted that the film serves as a chilling, nuanced examination of contemporary moral decay, a theme I explored in depth during my review from Cannes. Much like the psychological tension found in modern thrillers, Minotaur forces the audience to confront the “moral brain rot” that often hides behind the polished veneer of professional success.
