GitHub has retired six AI models across most Copilot experiences, including chat, editing and agent workflows. Teams using those models need to move their workflows and integrations to supported alternatives.

The changes took effect on October 19, following advance notice in September. GitHub has provided replacements for each retired model, although an organisation’s administrators may need to enable access before users can select them.

The replacement list covers models from Google, OpenAI and xAI

Gemini 3.7 Flash is replaced by the suggested Gemini 3.8 Flash. For GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4, GitHub recommends GPT-6.1 Sol.

The suggested successor to both GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini is GPT-6 Luna.
