A Masterclass in Grief: Mass (2021)
Genre: Drama
IMDb: 7.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
Few films manage to capture the raw, suffocating weight of tragedy as effectively as Mass. The narrative centers on a high-stakes, deeply uncomfortable meeting between two couples in the quiet confines of a church basement. Years after a horrific school shooting, Gail (Martha Plimpton) and Jay (Jason Isaacs)-who lost their child in the violence-sit down with Linda (Ann Dowd) and Richard (Reed Birney), the parents of the shooter.
What follows is a masterclass in tension and empathy. The film relies almost entirely on a single, continuous conversation, stripping away cinematic artifice to focus on the actors’ performances. It is a grueling, necessary exploration of accountability, forgiveness, and the impossible search for closure. Much like the claustrophobic intensity found in stage plays like God of Carnage, Mass forces the audience to sit with the discomfort of human suffering until it becomes transformative. It is a heavy watch, but one that leaves an indelible mark on the viewer.
