Pivotal, the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) startup famously supported by Google co-founder Larry Page, is undergoing a significant leadership change. Ken Karklin, who steered the company as CEO for over four years, has officially vacated his position.
A New Chapter for the eVTOL Sector
While the company’s official announcement cited that Karklin is moving on to explore “new endeavors,” the departure marks a pivotal moment for the firm. During his tenure, Karklin oversaw the company’s transition from conceptual designs to tangible, functional hardware. Reflecting on his time at the helm, Karklin emphasized that the sector has matured significantly, moving away from the era of speculative prototypes toward a landscape defined by rigorous operational standards and the practical realities of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
“Leading Pivotal has been the privilege of my career,” Karklin noted in a public statement. “We have successfully bridged the gap between the theoretical potential of light eVTOL aircraft and their actual performance in the field.”
Interim Leadership and Strategic Continuity
To ensure stability during this transition, the board has appointed Mike Ross as the interim CEO. Ross, a seasoned veteran in the aviation sector, brings a wealth of industry experience to the role, having joined Pivotal’s board of directors in November 2025. His appointment is intended to maintain the company’s momentum as it navigates the complexities of the personal aviation market.
The Evolution of Personal Flight
Karklin’s exit arrives at a critical juncture for the company, occurring roughly two years after the commercial launch of the Helix. The Helix represents a bold experiment in personal transportation: a single-seat, lightweight electric aircraft designed for accessibility. By bypassing the traditional requirement for a pilot’s license, the company has positioned the Helix as a consumer-grade vehicle, with entry-level pricing beginning at approximately $200,000.
As the AAM market continues to heat up-with global investments in the sector projected to reach billions by the end of the decade-Pivotal faces the challenge of scaling production while maintaining the safety standards required for widespread adoption.
