While the television adaptation of The Last of Us continues to dominate conversations, recent insights suggest that the franchise’s true future lies back at its roots with Naughty Dog. As the HBO series potentially nears its narrative conclusion, the focus is shifting toward what lies ahead for the gaming powerhouse.
Neil Druckmann Clarifies Naughty Dog’s Role
In a recent discussion with journalist Gene Park, Neil Druckmann provided much-needed clarity regarding the studio’s involvement with the television show. Druckmann emphasized a clear separation between the game developers and the production of the HBO series, stating:
“I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season. So I can’t personally speak to how production is progressing.”
This statement serves as a reminder that while the show has brought the IP to a massive mainstream audience, the creative heartbeat of the franchise remains firmly within the walls of Naughty Dog.
Is The Last of Us Part 3 on the Horizon?
The status of a potential third installment has been a subject of intense speculation. Although Druckmann previously urged fans in March 2025 to temper their expectations regarding a third game, the rumor mill has remained active. Industry insider Daniel Richtman has suggested that Naughty Dog is juggling multiple high-profile projects, including a new entry in the Uncharted series and the mysterious Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, alongside ongoing work related to the The Last of Us universe.
The Franchise Remains a Priority
Despite the uncertainty surrounding specific titles, Druckmann’s message to the community is one of continuity. He reaffirmed that Naughty Dog remains the primary steward of the intellectual property. Even if the television adaptation eventually concludes, the studio is far from finished with the world of Joel and Ellie.
“It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with ‘The Last of Us.’ There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about,” Druckmann noted.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve-with major titles now frequently taking five to seven years to develop-it is logical that Naughty Dog would be deep into pre-production or early development on their next major project, even if they aren’t ready to pull back the curtain just yet.
