The Zcash ecosystem is gearing up for a significant technical evolution. Developers have officially scheduled the activation of the NU7 upgrade for November 5, a move designed to drastically enhance network throughput and user experience.
#### Accelerating the Zcash Network
The cornerstone of the NU7 update is a reduction in block time. By slashing the interval between confirmed transaction batches from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds, the network is effectively tripling its processing speed.
For a blockchain rooted in zero-knowledge proofs-cryptographic protocols that verify transaction validity without exposing sender, receiver, or amount data-this is a game-changer. With these shorter intervals, shielded, privacy-focused payments will soon achieve confirmation speeds comparable to the instantaneous nature of a modern contactless card payment.
#### Balancing Rewards and Sustainability
To maintain economic equilibrium, the upgrade introduces a compensatory rule alongside the faster block times. Because blocks will be generated three times more frequently, the reward allocated to miners per block will be reduced by a proportional factor. This ensures that the daily issuance of new ZEC remains stable, preventing inflationary pressure.
Furthermore, the community has spoken regarding the long-term monetary policy of the coin. In a recent governance vote, 98.9% of participating coinholders opted to preserve the Bitcoin-style halving schedule. Looking ahead, the network is also preparing for the future of miner incentives; starting in 2026, a new mechanism will begin accumulating transaction fees to ensure the network remains secure and sustainable for miners well beyond the 2031 block reward milestone.

The path to the mainnet launch is already underway. Lead developer Sean Bowe confirmed that the NU7 upgrade is slated to hit the Zcash testnet on October 1, allowing for rigorous stress testing before the November rollout.
