## Navigating Postpartum Health: Hailey Bieber Opens Up About PMDD Diagnosis
The journey into motherhood is often portrayed through a lens of pure bliss, but for Hailey Bieber, the experience following the arrival of her first child has included navigating the complexities of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
The model and founder of the skincare brand Rhode, who welcomed her son, Jack, in 2024 with her husband, pop icon Justin Bieber, recently shed light on this often-misunderstood health challenge.
### Understanding the Reality of PMDD
While many are familiar with standard PMS, PMDD represents a significantly more severe iteration. It is a clinical condition characterized by intense physical and emotional distress that manifests in the days preceding a menstrual cycle. Experts note that while PMS affects a large percentage of menstruating individuals, PMDD is estimated to impact roughly 3% to 8% of women of reproductive age, often causing debilitating mood swings, anxiety, and physical pain that can disrupt daily life.
### Breaking the Silence on Maternal Wellness
In a candid interview with *WWD*, Bieber revealed that her postpartum period brought these symptoms to the forefront. “After I had my son, I struggled with that [PMDD] a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it,” she explained.
For Bieber, the path to healing is paved with transparency. She emphasized that sharing personal struggles is a vital tool for mental health, noting, “Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone. When we can identify with each other and have conversations relating to each other and talking about the things we’re dealing with and struggling with, I do think it makes it feel like less of a lonely journey.”
### Investing in the Future of Women’s Health
Bieber is moving beyond just starting a conversation; she is actively funding solutions. Her company, Rhode, has committed to a significant philanthropic initiative: a US$5 million donation over the next three years to the Foundation For Women’s Health. This non-profit organization is dedicated to addressing the systemic “gender health gap,” a term used to describe the historical lack of clinical research focused specifically on female physiology and conditions like PMDD.
By prioritizing these resources, Bieber hopes to ensure that future generations of mothers and women have access to the data, diagnostics, and support systems that are currently lacking in the medical field.
