A Cinematic Stand: The Fight for Sinjajevina
“Only our people know how to protect this mountain.” This powerful sentiment anchors the newly released trailer for To Hold a Mountain, a poignant documentary film distributed by Submarine Deluxe. The project has already garnered significant prestige, having secured the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Much like the environmental activism seen in recent award-winning features such as All That Breathes, this film captures the intersection of human resilience and the natural world.
From Ancestral Roots to Modern Resistance
Set against the rugged, breathtaking backdrop of Montenegro’s highlands, the narrative follows Gara, a shepherd, and her daughter, Nada. Their quiet, traditional existence is shattered by the looming threat of NATO military exercises on their ancestral territory. The film serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing global struggle for land rights; according to recent data from the Land Rights Now initiative, indigenous and local communities manage over 50% of the world’s land, yet often face immense pressure from state-led industrial or military expansion.
A Mother’s Transformation into a Symbol of Defiance
The documentary chronicles Gara’s evolution from a private shepherd into a formidable grassroots leader. Refusing to let her family’s heritage be erased, she spearheads a protest movement to safeguard the Sinjajevina plateau. Her journey is not merely political; it is deeply personal. As the trailer highlights, the encroaching military presence forces a reckoning with the family’s history of violence. As Nada matures, the film masterfully explores the tension between the mother’s fierce protective instincts and the daughter’s search for her own identity amidst a landscape defined by both beauty and conflict.
